British author Victoria Hislop and American poet and University of Oxford professor Alicia Elsbeth Stallings will receive the Lord Byron Medal for their contributions to society, the Company for Hellenism and Philhellenism announced.
The award, given annually in collaboration with the Academy of Athens, recognizes individuals whose work aligns with the values of Hellenism and Philhellenism. The ceremony will be held Feb. 4, 2025, at 7:00 PM at the Academy of Athens.
The medal, named after the famed poet and Philhellene Lord Byron, is awarded to individuals in fields such as diplomacy, culture, and academia whose actions and work reflect Greek culture and the spirit of Philhellenism. Descendants of Philhellenes who supported the Greek War of Independence are also eligible. Recipients receive a bronze medal and a certificate.
Hislop, a member of the Royal Society of Literature, is being honored for her literary contributions. Stallings, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is recognized for her work in poetry and education.
The ceremony will feature a classical music concert by the Hellenic Air Force Band, conducted by Alexandros Litsardopoulos, with performances by baritone Angelos Mousikas and soprano Sophia Zova. This will be the first full orchestra performance at the Academy of Athens. The program includes works by Verdi, Bizet, Puccini, Lehar, and Strauss.
