Wednesday Brings Mario Frangoulis' Acropolis Performance

The internationally acclaimed tenor will be singing aria along with with legendary pianist Eugene Kohn, who has played for Maria Callas and Pavarotti. The event's official press release can be read below.

June 3, New York & Athens, Greece — Mario Frangoulis, the beloved international Greek tenor returns to his homeland for a very special piano~voice recital in honor of the opening of an international conference on the environment. His all Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, knowledgeable on environmental issues, will attend the recital at the historic Herod Atticus Theatre at the Acropolis.

The Patriarch will speak at its opening and at the conference, which will be attended by experts, scientistis, Nobel Laureates and dignitaries from all over Europe. This first of a kind event has been organized under the auspices of the Biomedical Research Foundation (www.bioacademy.gr), a division of the Academy of Athens, and is supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

Together, for the first time, with maestro and pianist Eugene Kohn, Mario Frangoulis will perform the great works of Scarlatti, Bononcini, Stradella, as well as songs by Francesco Paolo Tosti and known arias by Handel, Gluck, Bellini, Verdi and Puccini.

Greece's beloved tenor will also pay tribute to the great composers of his own country, singing the great works of Yannis Markopoulos, Stavros Xarhakos, Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hadjidakis. These works will include «Axion Esti» by Nobel winning poet Odysseus Elytis, «Thiteia» by Manos Eleutheriou, «Erotokritos and Aretousa» by Vincenzo Kornaros, «Magnus Eroticus» poems by Sappho, the poetry of C.P. Cavafy, Dionysios Solomos, and «Aspro Peristeri» («White Dove») by Nikos Gatsos. There will also be a special tribute to Mikis Theodorakis who will sing an excerpt from Pablo Neruda's masterpiece «Canto General» in a new arrangement written for this recital.

This diverse and inspirational program has never been performed or presented anywhere in the world, and promises to be a unique and rich musical experience, honoring the rich European musical tradition. It is defined by simplicity, with only two powerful instruments — the piano and the voice.

Eugene Kohn has enjoyed incredible collaborations which began with Maria Callas at her famed «Master Classes» at the Julliard School of Music in New York, launching his career as one of the most sought-after maestros in the world.

He has conducted in some of the most prestigious orchestras in Vienna, Hamburg, Berlin, Barcelona, and of course at New York's famed Metropolitan Opera. Maestro Kohn has worked with Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo (for the last 25 years), and recently with Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman in the Classical Crossover genre, where Mario Frangoulis also launched his international career.

Voted Best Male Classical Crossover Artist of 2011, Mario Frangoulis is best known for his unique ability to span a broad range of musical genres from opera to booming rock anthems and his impeccable musical intepretation in live performances. He is consistently ranked at the top of the genre, speaks and sings in five languages, and headlines concerts around the world performing with musical icons such as Placido Domingo, Lara Fabian, Sarah Brightman, and Justin Hayward.
