Jewish Community Praises Thessaloniki Mayor Boutaris
Greece's Jewish community has applauded Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris, for wearing the Star of David during his second-term's inauguration.
It has been reported that Boutaris wore the Star on his jacket, in response to a Golden Dawn member's city councilman position. The Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece penned a letter to Boutaris that stated, "Your gesture sends a strong and clear message to those nostalgic for Nazism and fascism...that under your leadership your city will continue to fight against any phenomena of racism, intolerance and anti-Semitism", according to JP Updates.
Thessaloniki Mayor Boutaris' wearing of the Star is considered to be a supportive act for the Jewish community, in Greece's second largest city. Many of its followers were tragically persecuted during the Holocaust and currently holds approximately 1,000 Jews.
