Okeanos launched following refit

It took a decade to complete work so the submarine "Okeanos" of the Hellenic Navy would be fit and ready to launch to scour the Aegean. The Type 209 submarine joined the Navy fleet in 1978, but the upgrading works started in 2004 and was completed this year.

 

The launching ceremony took place in the presence of the President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias and Defence Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos.
As Mr. Avramopoulos stated at the ceremony, "Okeanos" is the second vessel of this type modernized and delivered. Still pending is the completion of the upgrading works in two more submarines.
The launch of "Okeanos" comes a few days after the launch of "Pipinos", a different type of submarine, of the Type 214 project that also had a twisted saga..
Under the Neptune-II modernization program, "Okeanos" has a new navigation systems, enhanced noise reduction, and a new sonar and radar, the ISUS combat suite, torpedoes and Sub Harpoon guided missiles Sub Harpoon.
