Kammenos blocks acceptance of new helicopters

Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos has blocked acceptance of the remaining NH-90 Army Aviation transport helicopters, because "the program and contracts signed are under scrutiny by the authorities."

This created a problem with the acceptance of the 12th NH-90 helicopter in the series and the first of the helicopters of the "Special Operations" version, which was scheduled to take place today at the Army Aviation base at Pachi, Megara by the staff of the 2nd Army Aviation Helicopter Battalion (2nd TEAS). The process "froze" yesterday through a ministerial order and created an issue with respect to whether the manufacturer NH Industries will fly the helicopter bound for Pachi as it wanted, citing contractual obligations, or not, as claimed by the Greek side, which would not accept it. A likely scenario includes the arrival of the helicopter at Pachi with a company crew, but its non-acceptance by Army Aviation staff.
Mr Kammenos also claimed that this program is problematic, and is one of the programs that are being investigated by the Internal Affairs department of the MOD, the other is that of the Type 214 submarines, and that it has not signed a contract for support and spares worth 70 million euros, requested by the manufacturers until the program is completely cleared.
The entire program is for the acquisition of a total of 20 NH-90 helicopters, of which 16 of the transport version, and the remaining 4 of the Special Operations version, as well as four MEDEVAC collections, which can be fitted toall 20 helicopters.
The program was problematic
from the start with initial funding earmarked to buy twice as many helicopters, and eventually without any reduction in the total price only twenty were obtained. Also there was a huge delay in delivery.
