US urges EU leaders and Greece to make mutual compromises

The US government urged European leaders and the Greek government to proceed with mutual compromises during the negotiations on the extension of the loan agreement, while at the same time putting pressure to Europe and Athens in order to reach an agreement on Greece's financing.

The US also warned against the "return of uncertainty" in the eurozone in case of failure, according to a senior official of the US Treasury. "It is important for Europe and the global economy to reach an agreement," the official underlined adding that both sides must make mutual "compromises" in order to achieve that. The Europeans have the ability to deal with that challenges, he reassured.

"If the negotiations collapse, Greece will feel immediately the economic impact," and the eurozone will experience "the return of uncertainty, as well as the economy in its entirety." The US Treasury Secretary Jack Lew had telephone conversations with senior European officials on Friday, the official said
