Investigation into conditions in Amygdaleza detention center
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Head prosecutor Ilias Zagoreos ordered the launch of a preliminary investigation into recent reports and allegations regarding the living conditions for undocumented migrants being held at the Amygdaleza migrant detention center.
Earlier this month, a foreign national committed suicide in the premises of the center, triggering protests. Alternate Citizen Protection Minister Yannis Panousis the following day visited Amygdaleza and announced that this kind of detention centers would be closed down. The preliminary investigation will look into whether offenses relating to “acts and behaviours abusing the detainees” have been committed and to identify the perpetrators.
