Attempted self immolation over municipal fine

At the last moment men of the police and fire brigade prevented the suicide attempt of a cafe owner in Halandri.
The 60 year old man doused himself with gasoline outside the cafeteria at the junction of Gini and Paleologos streets and threatened to light himself on fire. The reason that led him to this desperate act was the fine imposed by the Municipality amounting to 8,500 euros for placing tables and chairs on the sidewalk.
Eventually the police officers caught the man that was only injured, while the fire destroyed some tables and chairs.
