Tsipras congratulates Podemos leader Iglesias after Spanish electoral results
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras spoke with Podemos party leader Pablo Iglesias late on Sunday, after electoral results showed that Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy's conservative party lost the absolute majority in national elections.
According to government sources, Tsipras congratulated Iglesias and agreed with him that the results signalled the political loss of austerity governments. The two men also discussed the prospects of a coalition of progressive parties forming to rule the country.
In earlier statements following the electoral results, Tsipras said, "Austerity has been beaten politically in Spain as well," adding that "the powers that support society have entered the political scene dynamically."
"Our efforts have now been justified - Europe is changing!" he noted.
Following the counting of nearly 100% of the votes, Rajoy's Popular Party got 123 seats in the Spanish parliament (far below the 176 needed for an absolute majority), the Socialist Party got 90 seats, Podemos 69, and Ciudadanos 40 seats.
