KALLISTO Gives Greek Sheepdogs to Shepherds

Four Greek Sheepdog (Hellenikos Poimenikos) puppies were gifted by animal welfare NGO KALLISTO and the management of the Northern Pindus National Park to shepherds in the villages of Monodentri, Ano Pedina, Vitsa, amd Skamneli.

The pups were given by owners of the breed from the network organized by KALLISTO within the framework of the program LIFE Pindos/Grevena.

The NGO through the action is hoping to dampen the clash between naturalists and shepherds that have suffered losses from wolves and bear the organization protects. The project will go on until June 2017, with an emphasis in areas inhabited by bears in Ioannina and Grevena prefectures.

The Greek Sheepdog is a medium to large size dog, with a solid body and great physical strength that is capable of escorting the flock and also fight with the enemy while maintaining its physical superiority. Its head is massive with its muzzle-skull.

This flock guardian dog is not a breed for the average pet owner. Proud and hard-working, it is a natural sheep and goat guard, but never gathers or directs them. Working in pairs, the dogs prefer to move at the sides of the flock, guarding against wolves and other predators.

The Greek Sheepdog is an independent, brave, decisive, loyal, working dog, with a high sense of duty and strong protective instinct toward animals and its environment. Naturally wary, loyal only to the flock leader-shepherd, the Greek Sheepdog can be characterized as the Big Mountain shepherd's dog of Greece.
