Negotiations adjurned with no agreement reached

Negotiations with Greece’s international creditors were completed a little after 2 in the morning, with no agreeement. Differences between the government and lenders on the issues of pension, social security reforms and non-performing loans remain.
The new round of talks will resume on April 18 after the Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
“Negotiations will continue on Monday April 18th, in order to reach a deal by the next planned Eurogroup meeting scheduled to take place on April 22nd” stated Greek Finance Minister Eykleides Tsakalotos.
“We are adjourning” so that representatives of institutions and the Greek government may attend the meetings in Washington, DC on April 15-17, he added.
The Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers is due to hold informal talks in Amsterdam on April 22. The Greek bailout is also expected to be discussed by its stakeholders on the margins of high-level IMF and World Bank meetings that get underway in Washington on Friday.
Ideally, a technical deal between the negotiators should be reached “before the end of this week,” EU Economy Commissioner Pierre Moscovici told the European Parliament’s economic and monetary affairs committee in the French city of Strasbourg on Monday evening.
“This calendar would allow us ideally to reach an endorsement at the informal Eurogroup meeting next week, followed by two to three weeks to complete the draft legislative texts and the process of parliamentary approval, which would allow for the review to be finalized at the beginning of May,” he said.
Greece and its creditors are under pressure to reach a deal to avoid another near-bankruptcy in the country. Its liquidity situation is currently “manageable,” but “this cannot last indefinitely and I would not want us to end up in a dead end,” Moscovici has warned.
