Ambassador Haris Lalacos attended this morning a Congressional briefing commemorating the 42nd anniversary of Turkey’s invasion of the Republic of Cyprus organised by the American Hellenic Institute (AHI) & the Hellenic Caucus. The just resolution of the Cyprus issue remains a top priority of Greek foreign policy.
The Ambassador in his speech reiterated that a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem is a top national priority for Greece and that the current talks remain the only way towards a settlement. He also stressed that there can be no solution without the full withdrawal of Turkish occupation forces and the termination of the anachronistic system of guarantees. He made clear that Greece is supportive to Cyprus but does not intervene in the negotiation and that the Cypriot Government has the exclusive competence. He praised Cyprus for having concluded agreements with neighbor countries for the delimitation of its maritime zones.
