Second death from West Nile virus

Greek health authorities have raised the alarm as the second death in the country by the West Nile virus has been reported.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) was informed of another death of a woman aged over 80 who had been infected with the West Nile virus.

The death of the second victim, that also resides in the same county as the first victim, in the prefecture of Argolis, is attributed to complications from West Nile Disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes.

According to the information, the confirmation of the infection that caused the encephalitis and the death of the unfortunate woman, which was noted to have had bad health, arrived at KEELPNO in the last 20 days.

The data from the Center's weekly epidemiological report posted on his website indicate that two other patients are hospitalized, one is with encephalitis in ICU.

In total, this year, 12 people have been infected with the West Nile virus and have been hospitalized. Of these, 8 experienced severe symptoms in the central nervous system (meningitis, encephalitis and acute relaxed paralysis) and 4 had more mild symptoms that resembled those of influenza.
