Grigoropoulos' murder anniversary: Another excuse for chaos in Athens
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Around 1000 anarchists clashed with anti-riot police units in Athens and Thessaloniki, after a march in memory of the teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos who was shot dead by a police officer in 2008.
In downtown Athens the self-proclaimed anarchists set cars on fire and closed a few roads using trash bins set on fire.At least three cars were burnt.
The Polytechnic building was used as a base, because of the asylum that precludes police from entering, from which they were resupplied with petrol bombs. Building roofs in the surrounding Exarchia area were used as tower from which the so-called anarchists rained rocks, petrol bombs, flower pots and other objects on police.
Police were purely on the defensive and all their efforts focused on keeping reporters from the scene.
In 2008 after the death of Grigoropoulos, Greece faced an unprecedented three weeks of riots in many cities.
Since then the anniversary events in his memory are marked with smaller scale riots, just as happens with the November 17th celebrations every year.
