Three die in Thessaloniki blaze

A child, an elderly woman and a man died on Tuesday in a fire that broke out in an apartment in Kordelio, a suburb of the northern port city of Thessaloniki.
Reports suggested that firefighters managed to rescue two people from the blaze in a fifth-floor apartment on 5 Trapezoundos Street, while a third succeeded in escaping before the fire service arrived.
All three are being treated for injuries, though it was not clear whether they their lives are at risk.
Initial reports did not include details regarding the identities of the victims or the causes of the blaze.
Police are looking into the possibility that the 70 year old man, who had been discharged from a psychiatric hospital two months ago, actually set himself on fire in order to commit suicide and blazed out of control. According to some reports the elderly man had attempted this twice before.
