Seven ton whale carcass removed from Santorini caldera
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The extremely difficult task of recovering a dead whale, weighing more than 7 tonnes and 9 meters in length, which had been cast on a rough coast, in the Adiavata region of the Santorini caldera, was completed late Wednesday afternoon.
For the task of the recovery, the small Ferry Thirasia Island was used, and a crane was boarded to that purpose.
The whale's body was wrapped in cloth and tied with ropes by a team of divers and then the crane attempted to lift it.
The process turned out to be very difficult as the weight was great and the whale had already begun to split open and was in danger of dissolving.
The boat drew the floating whale that was still attached to the crane behind Aspronisi, where it was once again attempted to lift it and put it on board, successfully this time.
Then Thirasia Island sailed to Athinios from where the dead whale was transported and buried in the island waste disposal site.
The coordination of the whole project was carried out by the President of the Municipal Port Fund of Thira, Elias Pelekis, who was on board and oversaw the whole process.
