SYRIZA attempting gerrymandering in Athens and Attica
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Τhe amendment to "breakdown" the Second Athens Electoral District, included in the "Cleisthenes 1" Bill, which was tabled in Parliament by Interior Minister Panos Skourtetis, for the changes in local government, is interpreted αs a pre-election targeting movement, .
The division of the Second Electoral District of Athens, in which 44 deputies are elected, about 1/6 of the whole House, has been agreed upon as necessary by all the parties, as well as the "breaking" of the so-called Rest of Attica Electoral District, which is also foreseen in the amendment.
However, the way in which the government wants to split the Second Athens District and create three new constituencies clearly favors SYRIZA as it includes municipalities (including the largest Philadelphia-Chalcedon and Galatsi)where SYRIZA had first come in the 2015 elections in the northern suburban area, where ND had come first.
Accordingly, it separates both the rest of Attica and the area of the municipalities of the southern suburbs, which in the last elections in the majority voted for New Democracy, the municipalities of Ilioupoli, Dafni-Ymittou, Zografou, Vyronas and Kessariani are added, where SYRIZA prevailed ...
According to the Ministry of the Interior's amendment, the Second Electoral District of Athens with 44 seats is divided as follows:
the Northern Sector (B1) includes 14 municipalities and will have 15 seats,
the Western Sector (B2) 7 municipalities and will have 11 seats and
the Southern Sector (B3) 13 municipalities will have 18 seats.
Specifically:
• In the B1 sector are the municipalities:
Chalandri,
Maroussi,
Kifissia,
Nea Ionia,
Agia Paraskevi,
Neo Iraklio,
Papagou,
Penteli,
Lykovryssi - Pefki,
Vrilissia,
Transformation,
Filothei - Psychiko,
Philadelphia - Chalcedon and
Galatsi
• In the B2 sector belong the municipalities:
Peristeri,
Ilion,
Egaleo,
Agioi Anargyroi - Kamatero,
Petroupoli,
Haidari,
Agia Varvara.
(SYRIZA prevailed in these municipalities and no "transfer" of other municipalities occurs here...).
• The B3 sector includes the municipalities:
Kalithea,
Glyfada,
Nea Smyrni,
Agios Dimitrios,
Palaio Faliro,
Elliniko - Argyroupoli,
Alimos, Moschato - Tavros
and transferred from the central sector:
Ilioupoli,
Zografou,
Vyronas,
Dafni - Hymettus and
Kesariani.
The rest of Attica is divided into two constituencies:
East Attica with 10 seats, comprising 13 municipalities:
Acharnes,
Pallini,
Vari - Voula - Vouliagmeni,
Dionysus,
Spata - Artemida,
Oropos,
Marathon,
Koropi,
Saronis,
Peania,
Lavreotiki,
Rafina - Pikermi and
Markopoulo
West Attica with 4 seats, comprising 5 municipalities
Fyli,
Megara,
Aspropyrgos,
Eleusis,
Mandra
In West Attica in the previous election, 5 MPs were elected, but with a new distribution, one seat is lost and will be transferred to Achaia, where 9 out of 8 members will be elected.
And the vote for today's 16 year olds ...
As stated by circles of the opposition, this electoral ... cooking that SYRIZA is attempting should not be judged alone, but in conjuction with other moves, such as the expected announcements by the Minister of Education for the abolition of the Pan-Hellenic Examinations (a matter that is very important for all Greek families ...) and "open" access to Universities and Technological Educational Institutions, the mergers of university schools across the country again in the light of the electoral impact on the region, as well as the right to vote at 17 (today's 16 year olds).
