The restitution of Lake Karla in Thessaly, one of the major European environmental projects and the largest in the Balkans, was inaugurated on Friday by European Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Cretu and Interior Minister Alexis Charitsis.
Cretu said that "the specific project revives a destroyed ecosystem as Lake Karla will recreate anew the lost biodiversity of the region. (...) The project is a visible symbol of European cohesion," and congratulated laborers and the engineers for their work.
On his part, Charitsis said that "now that the country is exiting the crisis, it is important that all the active entities of society cooperate in order to move into a new phase without past mistakes and wrongs."
The regional governor of Thessaly Costas Agorastos noted that the reconstituted Lake Karla hosts 181 bird species and 14 species of fish, and that the lake provides water to irrigate 15 hectares of farmland.
