Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is bringing issues of foreign policy to the forefront, and in his capacity as Foreign Minister he is trying to change strategy.
According to press information, Alexis Tsipras intends to inform the political leaders in the next few days about the issue of the Aegean Sea, meeting them either alone or by telephone. The prime minister's goal is for all to assume responsibilities after the tendering of a relevant bill.
There are those who see, behind Tsipras; decision, that the prime minister is trying to play the card of national issues "within limits" as an attempt to mitigate the political deterioration due to Macedonian.
Meanwhile, Ankara is raising tones on the occasion of the government's plan to progressively extend Greek territorial waters to 12 nautical miles. The Maximus Mansion (PM's office) has decided to keep tones low and does not want - as explained by diplomatic sources - unecessary escalation. "In any case, we are safeguarding our rights," they comment. The government spokesman's statement that the country will not negotiate with anyone to exercise the rights stemming from our national sovereignty, move along this line.
However, the incendiary statements made by Turkish Defense Minister Akar that "Ankara will not accept any fait accompli in the eastern Mediterranean" and no "Greek interference in any activity in the area" have been causng concern.
Preparations beginn for Tsipras' trip to Istanbul
The preparations for the upcoming visit of Alexis Tsipras to Istanbul have begun, following an invitation by Turkish President Erdogan.
