Featured Handeslblatt: In the hell of Moria - Greece is incompetent and Europe is indifferent

The inhumane conditions in Moria, Lesvos are once again at the focus of the German press.

Another detailed article on the situation in the refugee camp in Moria, Lesvos, is published by Handelsblatt newspaper. Under the title "In the Hell of Moria" the reporter states: "In the refugee camps of the Greek Aegean islands, despicable conditions prevail. The Greek government can not cope with the problem. And Europe is indifferent."

Describing the situation on the island, the author points out: "Newcomers, who do not find space in the refugee center containers, should find shelter outside, in the improvised camp. There they set up their tents or live in improvised huts. Children play in the rubbish that is thrown everywhere among the tents. Next to the fence surrounding the camp flows a brown stream of dirt. When it rains the camp turns into a sea of mud."

The reporter then quotes figures on the number of asylum seekers in Greece and notes that: "International Organizations are raising analarm. UN High Commissioner for Refugees officials have seen snakes and rats in Moria. Dirty water and waste flow inside the camp says one report. Koumi Naidoo, Amnesty International secretary general, said he was left "speechless and shocked."

The situation in the refugee center is "the most disgusting and embarrassing I've ever seen." What worries him most is the fear of sexual violence that many women conveyed to him.

Even young, healthy men, like three Syrians who live in the refugee center in Moria, are afraid. When darkness falls, the gangs come out: "Drugs, prostitution, rape, robbery - here  rules the law of violence," says one young Syian named Malik.

The policy advocated by the EU, which provides for asylum seekers to be held in the islands until a decision is taken, has turned Lesbos into an open-air prison, says Tador Gardo of Human Rights Watch Non-Governmental Organization. The organization also blamed the EU: "Unfortunate conditions are shameful for the whole of Europe". But Europe is indifferent. It is enough that immigrants stay in Greece."
