Professor Efthymios Lekkas, president of the Organisation of Anti-Seismic Planning and Protection, accused his seismologist colleagues on Thursday of 'social and scientific irresponsibility' for making predictions of an imminent strong quake in western Greece.

Speaking to media on Thursday, Lekkas said that "statements including confusing and irrational data and rumours over imminent seismic activity in western Greece is an act of social and scientific irresponsibility," Lekkas told media.

He added that the residents of western Greece should remain calm and not be influenced by these rumours. Local departments of government agencies are at a state of alertness and preparedness, and have proven this during the recent quakes. Moreover, the buildings are in good condition and have withstood intense seismic activity so far.

As Lekkas said, it is well known that western Greece is a high-seismic activity region.

Asked if he will ask the prosecutor to intervene, he said that this is the relevants minister's matter.
