The snakes of the Virgin Mary have appeared again on Kefalonia

Featured The snakes of the Virgin Mary have appeared again on Kefalonia

The snakes of the Virgin Mary once again, this year, have been faithful to their annual ... appointment, as they already made their appearance in Kefalonia.

According to kefaloniapress, the first snake of the Virgin Mary appeared on Monday night, the Savior's Eve - as the custom states - at the Virgin Mary of Lagouvarda in Markopoulos. Those in charge of the church where the first snake of the Virgin Mary "emerged" said the temple would be open for pilgrimage from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

Shortly afterwards, two snakes of Our Lady appeared in Arginia. According to kefaloniapress, residents of the village have found the snakes in the place they have been appearing for decades. The two snakes of the Virgin Mary were transported to the Church of the Virgin and await the pilgrims.

Snakes of Virgin Mary: A "custom" with history
The Kefalonians - but also visitors to the island - are anxiously awaiting the snakes of the Virgin Mary every year, as many fear that if they do not show up, something bad will happen. According to tradition, the snakes of the Virgin Mary have not appeared twice today: The first was in August '40, shortly before the war broke out, and the second in August 1953, when Cephalonia suffered a severe earthquake.

The snakes of the Virgin Mary have special characteristics. They bear a cross on the head and tongue, and have particularly gentle skin and friendly demeanor.

According to tradition, in 1.200 AD, in an attempt to capture the then female Monastery by pirates, snakes appeared, which made a fence with their bodies between the monastery and the pirates, who panicked and fled. Since then, in memory of the event, the snakes of Our Lady have been miraculously displayed until today. By the 15th of August more snakes are expected in Markopoulo as well as in Arginia in Kefalonia.
