Turkish defence minister: Do not be mistaken, Cyprus is our national goal

Akar pointed out that Turkey has responsibilities and rights as a guarantor force in Cyprus and said the presence of the Turkish army on the island is necessary

The Varosia (Famagusta enclosed area) was examined, by air and land, by Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, who said, among other things, that Turkey has responsibilities and rights as a guarantor force and that it is determined to do whatever it takes and that the presence of the Turkish army on the island is necessary.
 
According to the illegal Turkish Cypriot news agency, Mr Akar, accompanied by the leadership of the Turkish army, was briefed by the leadership of the occupying forces, had meetings, visited camps and inspected military units.

As the "news agency" notes, it is the first time a Turkish defense minister has visited the occupied territory accompanied by such high-level Turkish military officers.

The Turkish minister said in statements that the Turkish army has been in Cyprus since 1974 and that their main purpose is to ensure the existence and security of the Turkish Cypriots. That was what they were doing and they will continue to do whatever it takes, he said.

"From 1974-2019, there is no change in the position, attitude and perception of the Turkish Armed Forces. We are in favor of peace and good neighborly relations in the Aegean, Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus," he said.
He also said that Turkey's drilling vessels are continuing their operations and that the Navy ships are supporting them.

Mr Akar added that they expect Greece and the "Greek Cypriot administration" to act in the context of international law and good neighborly relations. Turkey, he argued, is a guarantee of peace and stability in the region.

"We have done everything in line with the guarantee and alliance agreements and we will continue to do so. No one should attempt to remove them, it is not possible, it will be a futile endeavor. Cyprus is our national goal. Everyone should know this, do not be mistaken," he said, adding that Turkish Cypriot political equality and security is essential.
