Fisherman on Crete finds toxic fish in gut of catch

Featured Fisherman on Crete finds toxic fish in gut of catch

An mateur fisherman who caught a garfish (belona belona) was surprised to find that it had in its stomach a number of newly hatched silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), an extremely poisonous fish.

As the fisherman was cleaning the fish in preparation for cooking he saw in the gut the toxic meal it had had. As he was aware of the toxicity he did not hazard eating it.

Todfish are an invasive species that entered the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal and hs become a menace in the SE Med and is now invading the Aegean.

According to the Zarpa News website, the fish weighing about 1.5kg. and was caught by 31-year-old farmer and amateur fisherman Elias Tseros, last Sunday night, outside the port of Ierapetra.

Mr Tseros took the find to ichthyologists for analysis. The find augurs badly for fishing in the Aegean as the toadfish could affect all sorts of other fish that may feed upon it, but also because their voracity puts other species at risk.
