Turkey-Libya Maritime Memorandum: Turkish ambassador summoned by the Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry for explanations

In particular, the Greek foreign minister invited the Turkish ambassador to Athens, at the foreign ministry, to give explanations. Nikos Dendias spoke on the phone with his Cypriot and Egyptian counterparts, Nikos Christodoulides and Samekh Hassan Shukri respectively.

At the same time, the Permanent Representation of Greece to the E.U. has received instructions to immediately consult the European Commission and in particular the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini.

Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias described as “completely unacceptable and beyond all reason”, any discussion about establishing an Exclusive Economic Zone between Turkey and Libya, in his comments about the relevant agreement announced by Ankara on the delimitation of maritime borders.

“Such an effort shows a complete lack of geographic knowledge and bordering on ludicrous, because it obviously ignores that between the two countries, lies the large geographic land area of Crete,” said Dendias.

Concerning Turkey’s letter to the United Nations, the foreign minister described the Turkish claims as “completely unacceptable” and said that “Greece will respond in detail to the United Nations and all member states.”
