Greek industry’s continued participation in the Leopard 2 program

Featured Greek industry’s continued participation in the Leopard 2 program

In December 2018, Hungary agreed to purchase 44 German Leopard 2A7 + tanks and 24 PzH 2000 self-propelled guns from Germany at a cost of $ 565 million.

A few days ago Balkan Security Network remembered something most people tend to forget: there are still companies in Greece that build parts for the Leopard 2, which have not stopped cooperating with KMW since the completion of the Greek program for 170 Leopard 2A6HEL and continue to receive significant construction work on new tank production or upgrade programs.

According to the report, several parts of the Hungarian Leopard 2A7 are expected to be manufactured in Greece, mainly by METKA. The latter has also built hulls and turrets on behalf of the Greek State and Qatar. Companies such as EODH and HDVS, as well as smaller ones are engaged in new Leopard 2A7 programs, as well as German and Danish Army vehicle modernization programs, and are benefitting from meeting the needs of the huge user pool of the type. The firm IDE has also been active in this area, showing that when a top investment, like the Leopard 2A6HEL program, is made, then the economic and development benefits for the Greek industry can be long term.
