Greek Transport Ministry preparing city scooter regulations

Made popular mostly through the Lime sharing app, electric vehicles, including the popular lime-colored scooters, may be an ideal way to move around in less time and with less money, but users/drivers of the popular two-wheeled vehicles are currently not obliged by law to follow any rules.

According to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, purchase, use, safety, and parking issues will be addressed in the new framework to be tabled in the coming months and to cover scooters, shared bicycles, and electric pedal assisted, and other small vehicles.

According to Deputy Transport Minister Yiannis Kefalogiannis, regulation will focus on size and speed of the vehicles

Kefalogiannis added that provisions will also be made for the micromobility market including a focus on sale of scooters and accessories as well as on ways to ensure safety standards.

Transport experts are stressing that though electric scooters are eco-friendly modes of transport offering micromobility modes which are cheaper and easier to use, Athens, together with many other European cities, was not prepared for the sudden appearance of the vehicles on roads and pedestrian walkways making it necessary to introduce regulations and fines.
