National Public Health Organization (EODY) head Panagiotis Arkoumaneas paid a visit on Tuesday to the Moria hotspot on Lesvos island to review Covid-19 preventative measures on the island.
Arkoumaneas held a series of meetings with officials that included the Moria Reception and Identification Center's director, the Lesvos branch of Doctors Without Borders, the director of Mytilini General Hospital and the president of the Medical Association of Lesvos.
In a meeting with Stratis Kytelis, the mayor of Mytilini whose region includes the hotspot, Arkoumaneas discussed conditions on the island and Moria, which hosts nearly 20,000 migrants and refugees on its premises and around it.
Kytelis presented the municipality's actions against the pandemic and asked for "the immediate decongestion, guarding and strengthening of the center with more staff," and stressed the need for a special quarantine space within the structure. He also called for similar measures of staff reinforcement at the Vostaneio Hospital of Mytilene.
According to an announcement by the Mytilini municipality "the president of EODY expressed his satisfaction with the municipality's initiatives to tackle the pandemic and pledged to meet the mayor's request for the installation of a mobile health unit on the island in early May, to provide testing of migrants for Covid-19."
Greek and international organizations like the United Nations have been focusing recently on removing vulnerable groups to other facilities.
