Greece receives aid for refugees via EU Civil Protection Mechanism
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The European Commission is working closely with Greek authorities to help implement an emergency plan against potential coronavirus outbreaks at Greek islands' refugee camps, the Commission said on Tuesday.
In this context, Austria has provided 181 housing and sanitation booths via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The Commission will co-finance the shipping costs of the special booths, which are equipped with showers and toilets.
Due to Austria's offer, "Greece will be better prepared to prevent the spread of the virus to vulnerable refugees and migrants. The EU is ready to provide further assistance," said Crisis Management Commissioner and European Emergency Response Coordinator Janez Lenarcic.
Greece has activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to request housing units, sanitation and medical equipment, including oxygen generators, X-ray machines and wheelchairs.
