Underground Youth Orchestra (UYO) an ambassador of Greek music around the world
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
The Underground Youth Orchestra (UYO) is emerging as an ambassador of Greek music around the world through its participation in the #greecefromhome campaign of the Ministry of Tourism and the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO). It offers an opportunity to all those who wish to get to know Greece and what it stands for in ideas, values, experiences, due to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus crisis.
The Orchestra begins its rehearsals after the obligatory two-month abstention: "Our goal is the gradual return of the orchestra to the cultural activity based on the new conditions after the coronavirus ..." the artistic director of UYO, Kostas Iliadis, said.
UYO started with a group of children who wanted to be together and make music together. The rehearsals began in a basement of the conductor's house (hence the name of the orchestra) and in the early years the concerts were educational. Soon, the music group managed to stand out, to participate in festivals and hold concerts. Today, the band consists of 45 music students, aged 10-25, and since 2019 it has been housed in the Athens Concert Hall.
