The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announced the provisional statistical data depicting the weekly evolution of death counts for the period from the first (1st) to the twenty-second (22nd) (3/1/2022 – 5/6/2022) week of 2022. Data refers to the deaths that occurred in the Greek territory during that period due to various causes including deaths attributed to Covid-19. 

According to these data, the number of deaths in Greece for the first twenty-two (22) weeks of 2022 (3/1/2022 - 5/6/2022) amounted to 64,191 (32,326 men and 31,865 women), whereas for the corresponding period of 2021 (4/1/2021 – 6/6/2021) had amounted to 58,537 (30,132 men and 28,405 women) recording an increase of 5,654 deaths (9.66%). An increase of 9,248 deaths (16,83%) is recorded compared to the twenty-two (22) cumulative average of the six-year period 2016 - 2021 (54,943 deaths). The annual rates of change for the period 2016 - 2021 amount to 5.17% in 2021 compared to 2020 (55,659), -0.38% in 2020 compared to 2019 (55,869), 7.44% in 2019 compared to 2018 (52,001), -8.12% in 2018 compared to 2017 (56,597) and 10.99% in 2017 compared to 2016 (50,993).

According to the above data, the highest percentage increase of deaths for the period of the first twenty-two (22) weeks of the year 2022 compared to the corresponding period of 2021 was recorded in the 5th (31/01/2022 - 6/2/2022), the 4th (24/01/2022 - 30/1/2022) and the 2nd week (10/01/2022 - 16/1/2022) by 42.6%, 40.3% and 35.2% respectively whereas the most notable decrease was recorded in the 18th (2/5/2022 - 8/5/2022), the 21st (23/5/2022 - 29/5/2022) and the 17th week (25/4/2022 - 1/5/2022) by 20.6%, 6.5% and 5.9% respectively.
