Newly elected President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Theodoros Roussopoulos told Greek parliament commitees on Thursday his priorities are drafting a treaty on artificial intelligence (AI) and enhancing the visibility of the Council's work and actions.
In terms of the AI treaty, it is currently under way, he said, and would address potential risks to democracy. "Technological progress is certainly welcome, but there should be an effort to collaborate with large private companies as well, not just with states, to safeguard what is known as citizens' autonomy", said Roussopoulos.
The second priority aims to enhance the visibility of the Council of Europe as much as possible.
Roussopoulos also emphasized the consistent priorities of the Council of Europe, including the rule of law, the Cyprus issue, and Ukraine, and said his views were identical to those of the Council of Europe. In particular, asked to comment about the European Parliament's resolution alleging violations of human rights in Greece, Roussopoulos said that despite being an MEP of the ruling majority, there was no dilemma in terms of human rights, especially as chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly's Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Personsas well.
