Foreigner accused of arson on Mt. Hymettus returns to jail after testimony

A foreign national who was detained for the forest fire on Mt. Hymettus returned to jail after his testimony on Tuesday.
According to the Fire Brigade, the man is detained at Korydallos jail. He had been arrested by the Fire Brigade's criminal unit on March 30, 2024 for arson near the Monastery of Aghios Georghios Koutalas and led before a prosecutor.
His nationality was not disclosed.
Commenting on the decision to keep the man in detention, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias said, "We stress that arson by intention or negligence is the number one threat to the safety of citizens and their properties, as well as for Greece's natural wealth. Such acts must not happen and will not be tolerated."
