Ms Koppa had virtually announced her decision in an interview to the press on Sunday, stating that “the current PASOK with its leadership, political choices and because it has lost its distinctness from New Democracy can not rally the fragmented forces in its political sphere, “ she noted..
The MEP had even expressed her opposition to the government's decision to hold EU elections with voters choosing candidates and not through a list chosen by the party leadership befor the elections, noting , inter alia, that "any changes in electoral systems can not com as a surprise.”
"They need to be timely, after consultation with the greatest possible consensus," she pointed out , stressing that " tricks " and the expediency of the moment does not promote democracy, even when invoked, as such.
