Featured Floridis: The biggest blow to the rule of law is the Paraskevopoulos law - It release rapists and drug dealers

The Paraskevopoulos law was "the biggest blow to the rule of law", the Minister of Justice, Giorgos Floridis, said today, responding to the criticism leveled after the changes to the Criminal Code that "the Floridis law is going to become the opposite of the Paraskevopoulos law".

"Because respect for the rule of law means respect for irrevocable court decisions, this law came then and sentenced convicts to 1.5-2 years. Who went out? Rapists, child rapists, drug dealers. Then - and I speak from the side of the victims - when the murderer, the rapist, the child rapist was released, how did the victims feel? Where were they to have a word?" said the Minister of Justice, speaking to ANT1 channel.

As he explained, "the purpose of passing the new Civic Codes in February was that after many years when the interest was focused on defending the rights of the perpetrators, we should also see the victims. In other words, let's think that in the society we live in, the victims also have rights."

Mr. Floridis also referred to the reactions of lawyers and bar associations, who talk about piecemeal changes, stressing that "the bar associations are lying, because they know that we have been working on these recent regulations since the passing of the previous ones, because the phenomenon is evolving . No matter how magical we are, we can't make laws in a weekend." "We must finally legislate in favor of the victims and respond to the anguished request of Greek society that this feeling of impunity must end", added Mr. Floridis.

"Pretrial detention is not a general rule in cases of domestic violence, but if a felony is prosecuted, pretrial detention is the rule for those who the judge perceives that pretrial detention can prevent the worst," said Mr. Floridis, referring to the measures who announced about domestic violence.

"The new, additional regulations already apply to sports violence and arson, now they will also apply to domestic violence. What woe has befallen all the reactionary lawyers now? The measure has been in effect for a month and a half and it has started to pay off," he also said and concluded: "The goal is not to fill the prisons, the goal is to prevent incidents from happening."
