Patras fire threatened Karamandanio children's hospital - Everyone safe, a small miracle says Health Min.

Featured Patras fire threatened Karamandanio children's hospital - Everyone safe, a small miracle says Health Min.

A large fire broke out yesterday near the Karamandanio children's hospital in Patras, threatening the hospital and a nearby nursing home, both of which were evacuated immediately.

Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis was found at the Karamandanio hospital in Patras on Wednesday morning, a few hours after the big fire.

"I want to publicly express my gratitude to the commander of the 6th Health Region, Mr. Karvelis, but also to the hospital administrator and the staff. Everyone contributed to make yesterday's small miracle happen," Mr. Georgiadis initially stated and added:

"The hospital was evacuated by our own decision very early as a precaution. If the fire had arrived and then we evacuated, there could have been many difficult incidents with the young children here because of the smoke. This did not happen because we made the decision with Mr. Karvelis too early and with Mrs. Diokitria to evacuate. When the fire got here, the hospital had no more patients, the staff had taken care to remove anything flammable, so the hospital could deal with the fire more safely." As he said the hospital will operate again tomorrow.

The minister then referred to the importance of the new fire safety system that was recently installed, while he also answered about the private doctors who "refuse to undertake services in hospitals"
