The Tsakos family's 85 million tourist project on the island of Odysseus
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
Another tourism investment is in the works, this time in one of the Ionian destinations that have been gaining in visitor numbers in recent years, attracting α more specialized cohort with a large share in the nautical tourism segment.
We are talking about Ithaca and the new investment project in the Filiatro area, worth over 85 million euros, aimed at creating a luxury tourist unit, for which a file has been submitted to Enterprise Greece to be included in the strategic investment regime. The project bears the signature of a resounding shipping name, the Tsakos family, which, beyond the sea, has long since expanded the scope of its activities on land, whether it is in the tourism sector (such as in the family's place of origin in Chios for the development of the former XENIA) and much more in real estate, or even in the food and beverage sector, etc.
Now, the investment plan called "Epic_O" concerns in particular the development of hotel accommodation, luxury residences and other business activities as well as a tourist port, with the total amount of the proposed investment being budgeted at 85.45 million euros. The project concerns an area of 327 stremma within a wider, as reported, private land of a total area of 874 stremma in the Filiatro area of Ithaca in order to develop a mixed tourism project with particular quality characteristics and environmental standards. Specifically, as indicated in the relevant file, the aim of the proposed project is "the combination of a high-standard tourism development with the protection of the ecosystem of the wider area, and the promotion of the historical and cultural identity of Ithaca".
The project file, with the company "Atokos" as the project's operator, has been submitted to Enterprise Greece during the summer in order for it to be included in the provisions of Law 4864/2021 as a strategic investment, also requesting the receipt of zoning incentives (Article 7) and rapid licensing (Article 9), as well as the granting of the right to use the seashore and beach (Article 5) of Law 4864/2021. The partners of "Atokos" are Messrs. Panagiotis Tsakos and Nikolaos Tsakos, while the value of its real estate is estimated at 5.6 million euros.
It is noted here that the name Tsakos has also been linked to the popular yachting world's most "unknown" island in the Ionian Sea, Atokos, a rocky island of 4.5 square kilometers that is part of the Echinades islands complex and administratively belongs to Ithaca. It is a private but accessible island that belongs to the shipping family and is included in the Natura 2000 network because it may not be inhabited but it has rare marine flora.
