The decision to proceed with organ donation was made by the family of the 33-year-old American woman, who was injured in Preveli by falling into a ravine while hiking on Christmas Eve.
As reported by ekriti, the unfortunate woman, who has been hospitalized at the Chania Hospital since December 23, when the accident occurred, is brain dead and her family made the brave decision.
According to the information, the surgical teams that have come to the island to receive the organs are from the Laiko and Onassis Hospitals.
The unfortunate woman, who had lost the baby she was pregnant with from the fall, fought hard, but the heavy blows to the head and chest resulted in her death.
Life decision
The American woman who fought for her life for a week will now give her life with the decision of her relatives to proceed with organ donation. She herself, as a pregnant woman from her serious injury, lost the child and today she will give new life to people who are on waiting lists for organ transplants.
According to the commander of the Chania hospital, Giorgos Bea, the family of the 33-year-old respected her wish, given that she was an organ donor in her country and thus "a "bridge of life" was established: in cooperation and under the coordination of the Hellenic Transplant Organization, an organ collection team from the Athens General Hospital Laiko arrived at the Chania hospital and received the liver and kidneys, while the corneas will be donated to PAGNI by the surgical team of the Chania Hospital".
The 33-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition with severe head and brain injuries and was fighting a daily battle to stay alive thanks to the help and superhuman efforts of the ICU staff and the support of her family who was by her side from the first day she arrived from the USA.
“Greatness of soul and humanity”
The administration of the General Hospital of Chania expresses “deep and sincere condolences to the donor’s family” and bows, according to Mr. Beas, “to the greatness of soul and humanity”, while adding: “The idea of organ and tissue donation is the highest form of voluntary service and altruism, as well as the basic prerequisite for the realization of the medical miracle of transplantation”.
The Hospital administration thanks and congratulates all those involved who, as it emphasizes, demonstrated "perfect organization, coordination and cooperation for the process of receiving and utilizing the transplants in compatible recipients, bridging life with death".
