Wolves are being removed from Parnitha by a prosecutor's decision to protect red deer
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
In a crucial decision for the balance of the Parnitha ecosystem, the Animal Protection Prosecutor has ordered the removal of wolves living on the mountain, as part of a broader investigation that is underway.
The decision was taken in collaboration with animal welfare organizations and competent state bodies and aims to preserve the population of red deer – a protected species that is an important element of Parnitha’s biodiversity.
The implementation of the order has been assigned to the Parnitha Forestry Office, which is called upon to ensure the transfer of the wolves to mountainous areas of northern Greece. The new habitats will be specially selected and will provide conditions of safety and natural compatibility for the animals, in order to ensure their survival, without threatening another sensitive ecosystem.
The decision is based on an expert assessment carried out by competent environmental bodies, who assessed the dynamics of the local fauna and the risks posed by the coexistence of predators and prey in a limited space.
The transfer plan is expected to be implemented in the near future under the supervision of specialist scientists, while the process of identifying suitable areas for the wolves to settle in northern Greece has already begun.
