A tragic incident unfolded in Nea Smyrni on Sunday morning when a 71-year-old father fatally stabbed his 45-year-old son during a heated argument inside the family’s apartment.
According to eyewitness accounts, the confrontation escalated when the son, reportedly in a state of frenzy, attacked his father.
The elderly man, overwhelmed and unable to defend himself, grabbed a knife in an attempt to scare his son away.
However, in the struggle, he fatally wounded him.
The 45-year-old victim had a long history of drug addiction.
Despite repeated attempts at rehabilitation, he struggled for years with substance abuse, causing continuous turmoil within the family. Tensions had been mounting due to the son's ongoing battles with addiction, often leading to violent outbursts.
Witnesses described hearing screams and calls for help moments before the fatal stabbing.
Neighbors reported chaotic scenes, with the father shouting, “What have I done? What have I done?” after the attack, while others heard the son crying out, “My father stabbed me.”
The severity of the situation became clear only when police arrived at the scene.
Authorities were alerted by the victim’s brother, who lives in the same apartment building and realized the gravity of the incident.
When officers entered the apartment, they found the 45-year-old man dead, with his father standing beside him.
The father was immediately arrested and taken into custody.
The incident has left the local community in shock.
The victim’s brother and mother, who is estranged from her husband, are grappling with the immense grief and trauma of losing a family member in such a violent manner within their own home.
