The 44-year-old police officer who saved a mother and her daughter on a beach in Evia serves in the Chalkida Police Station, when they were swept away by the currents.

As became known since yesterday, the woman and the minor girl were on an inflatable sea mattress when they suddenly began to move away from land due to the currents.

Yorgos Megaritis, as reported by eviaonline.gr, claims that he was simply doing his duty. He was on a nearby beach when he heard the desperate cries for help and, without hesitation, dove into the water to reach the woman and the little girl, a primary school student, who were being swept away by the strong current towards Oropos.

“I fought the currents,” says the police officer who saved a mother and daughter who were swept away in an inflatable boat in Evia. “I dove without a second thought, I fought the currents”
As he said yesterday, speaking to the local website evima.gr, he was out swimming with his family when he heard the mother and her daughter calling for help from Skourogianni beach. “Immediately, without a second thought, I dove from the adjacent beach where I was and, fighting the currents and the strong winds that were blowing in the area, I managed to reach it after great difficulty,” he described.

"Suffice it to say that halfway through the trip I was also swept away by the strong currents, but for a moment I took a breath and said 'I have to get to the point and help the mother and her daughter who were terrified', as the speed with which they were being swept away by the winds was truly incredible. So I managed to get closer after great difficulty and managed to save mother and daughter from the adventure and carried them to the beach," he added.
