In the presence of the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Deputy Prime Minister, Kostis Hatzidakis, the Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Vassilis Kikilias, the Deputy Minister of Shipping and Insular Policy, Stefanos Ghikas and the Chief of the Coast Guard - Hellenic Coast Guard, Vice Admiral L.S. Tryfonas Kontizas, the ceremony of receiving and integrating five new high-speed patrol boats into the fleet of the Coast Guard - Hellenic Coast Guard took place today.
The receipt of the boats completes the work of Contract T49/2023, with a total budget of 17 million euros, which began in 2021 with funding from the "TAMEY 2021-2027" program. The value of each vessel amounts to 3.4 million euros, while with the exercise of the option for five more similar vessels, the total investment is set to reach 34 million euros.
The new patrol vessels were built in Finland by the company “Marine Alutech Oy Ab” and incorporate the most modern specifications. They are made of aluminum with a composite superstructure and have a length of 19.5 meters, a width of 5.1 meters and a draft of 0.8 meters. They can develop a maximum speed of over 50 knots, with an operational speed of over 32 knots and a range of up to 360 nautical miles.
The vessels feature:
-anti-ballistic protection around the superstructure,
-remote-controlled armament station with the ability to adapt 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm caliber firearms,
-modern VHF, MF/HF, FM/AM and satellite communication,
-navigation radar, day/night surveillance camera and electronic
chart system,
-capacity to accommodate a six-member crew and an additional special mission team, as well as transport of up to 40 people and
-full equipment of life-saving equipment, rescue equipment and maintenance tools.
Special care has been taken for rescue capabilities, with facilities for recovering shipwrecked people from the stern or from the side of the vessel, via a crane and rescue nets. The combination of speed, operational range and equipment makes the new vessels ideal for surveillance, deterring illegal activities and saving human lives at sea, even in difficult weather conditions.
Three of the five vessels have already been allocated to the Port Authorities of Tinos, Samos and Kos, while the other two will be allocated to the Port Authorities of Chios and Heraklion, substantially strengthening the operational presence of the Coast Guard in areas of particular geographical and strategic importance.
With the delivery of the new vessels, the Coast Guard - Hellenic Coast Guard acquires stronger means to protect the country's maritime borders, support island communities and fulfill its mission to protect human life at sea.
