A 53-year-old man who had been trapped in a makeshift tunnel between Gonni, Larissa, and Kallipefki, was pulled unconscious from a makeshift tunnel on Tuesday afternoon.
The man initially had contact with rescuers and was communicating with them, however, during the final stage of the rescue, his health deteriorated rapidly, resulting in him succumbing to his injuries.
The Fire Department announced that a total of 27 firefighters from Larissa and the EMAK of Thessaloniki and Larissa were mobilized. The trapped man was located and pulled unconscious, after coordinated efforts, with the operation being completed shortly after midnight.
It is recalled that there was initially a group of 4-5 people in the makeshift tunnel where the incident occurred. The 53-year-old, along with the other individuals, allegedly dug and created a 22-25 meter long tunnel, searching for elleged buried treasure.
Several of them experienced severe dizziness and discomfort. The first one who managed to get out reported the incident and asked for help from the authorities, while the rest of the group followed shortly after.
The authorities are now looking into the causes of the incident and investigating the purpose for which the tunnel was built.
