Featured Landmark achievement at Laiko Hospital: Four liver transplants in Greece

In an unprecedented medical achievement for Greece, the surgical team of Professor Giorgos Sotiropoulos, together with the anesthesiology team led by Dr. Aikaterini Lampadariou, successfully carried out four liver transplants between Friday, September 26, and Monday, September 29, at Laiko General Hospital.

The Health Minister extended warm congratulations to the hospital administration and all medical and nursing staff involved, stressing that the Ministry will continue to actively support the further development of solid organ transplantation in the country.

Minister’s Statement
“For the first time in Greece, and in a feat that is rare even among major transplant centers abroad, four consecutive liver transplants were performed at Laiko General Hospital. This was made possible through the coordinated efforts of a large medical and nursing team: anesthesiologists, surgeons, hematologists, intensivists, hepatologists, transplant coordinators, operating room and ICU nurses, ward staff, and administrative personnel.

All four transplant patients have been successfully extubated and are in very good condition. Three of them have already been discharged from the ICU.

Our deepest gratitude goes first and foremost to the families of the donors, who offered the ultimate gift of life. Thanks also to local transplant coordinators, ICU staff who cared for the donors, organ retrieval teams, the National Emergency Center (EKAB), and of course the Hellenic Transplant Organization for their vital coordination.

On behalf of the Ministry of Health, I congratulate the administration of Laiko Hospital and all the medical staff for their remarkable effort and contribution to the National Health System. With targeted actions, we will continue to support the growth of solid organ transplantation in Greece.”
