In the sacred space of the Asklepieion of Kos – the birthplace of Medicine and homeland of Hippocrates – the glorious ceremony of swearing in of distinguished doctors from Greek and international Universities took place yesterday, October 18. The event is part of the Hippocratic Week, which includes the Hippocratic School, the Symposium and the Oath. New Greek TV Presdent Yanna Darilis was there and was appointed appointed ambassador of IHF, promoting the legacy of Hippocrates and Greece’s contribution of original medicine.

In the presence of leading institutional, scientific and academic personalities, it highlighted the timeless connection of modern medical science with the values ​​and principles of Hippocratic philosophy, reminding us that ethics, knowledge and devotion to humanity remain the core of the medical profession.

The ceremony was organized by the World Hippocratic Institute of Physicians, the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos, the Municipality of Kos, the Medical Association of Athens and the Medical Association of Kos, under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic. The taking of the Hippocratic Oath at the Asclepius of Kos was broadcast live for the first time, worldwide, with the permission of the Ephorate of Antiquities, which supported the event as it does every year.

This year's Hippocratic Week with the Hippocratic School, with stops in Athens, Larissa and Kos, brought together 40 graduates and professors from 15 medical schools of universities in Greece, America, Argentina, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Austria, Oman, Tunisia, Cyprus and India, demonstrating the international appeal of the institution. The Hippocratic School was under the auspices of the Medical Schools of the National University of Athens, headed by Professor N. Arkadopoulos & Thessaly with A. Zimbis, having a specific educational program at the respective universities.

Dr. George Patoulis, president of the Athens Medical Association and the World Hippocratic Institute of Physicians, expressed his special honor and emotion for his participation in the swearing-in of the distinguished doctors at the Asclepius of Kos, emphasizing that “this ceremony is a hymn to excellence, knowledge and ethics, values ​​founded by Hippocrates and which continue to guide modern medicine.”

Mr. Patoulis also stated that the institution, which the Athens Medical Association has supported since 2011, contributes decisively to the dissemination of the Hippocratic Idea and medical excellence internationally, committing to continue promoting the work and legacy of Hippocrates to future generations of physicians.

The Hippocratic Week continued with a two-day scientific symposium at the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos, attended by presidents of the Medical Schools of Greece from America and the United Kingdom, two members of the Academy of Athens, as well as many international speakers.

The mayor of Kos, Mr. Theodosis Nikitaras, and the former president of the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos, Professor Stefanos Geroulanos, delivered greetings during the ceremony, while the master of ceremonies of the event was the president of the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos, emeritus professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mr. Nikolaos Papantoniou, who stated, among other things, that Hippocratic Week is for us "passport" of extroversion and recognition of the Hippocratic Ideas to the ends of the earth.

Participation this year was greater than any other year both in the number of Doctors who swore at the Asclepius and in the number of participants from Greek and foreign universities. The live representation of the Oath was a global event that will reach the ends of the earth, as a universal message. The ceremony of the Hippocratic Oath was performed in ancient Greek by Mr. Minas Hatziantoniou, while at the same time there was a translation into English by the Lecturer of the European University of Cyprus, Ms. Victoria Polydorou.

In the morning of the same day, the conference proceedings regarding the Hippocratic Week took place, with excellent students from foreign universities attending important speeches from the Greek scientific and academic community.

The conclusion of Hippocratic Week was held with the race in honor of Hippocrates, with the collaboration of Special Olympics, the Hellenic Red Cross, the Athens Medical Association, the World Hippocratic Institute of Physicians, the Hellenic Health Tourism Council, the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos and the Elementary Schools of Kos.
