Suspicions of Russian involvement in the sabotage of the German corvette, the 54-year-old Greek who was arrested is a Muslim

The suspicions of the German and European authorities are turning to the "usual suspect", Russia, for possible involvement in the strange case of the attempted sabotage of the German corvette Emden. According to reports in major German media, the arrests of the alleged perpetrators, a 37-year-old Romanian and a 54-year-old Greek Muslim from the Pomakohoria villages of Thrace, are, on the one hand, linked to a series of deliberate and serious damages to the corvette Emden in January 2025.
On the other hand, various individual indications are consistent with the scenario of a secret Russian operation, aimed at creating an anomaly in the German/European forces deployed mainly in the Baltic.
It is certainly striking that the sabotage attempt was carried out on a corvette, that is, on one of the smaller (in terms of dimensions-displacement, as well as armament) vessels of the German navy. In any case, the malicious act that led to the arrest of the two suspects, precisely because it was quite methodical and extensive, has put the competent law enforcement authorities on alert, both in Germany and at a pan-European level. Particularly, in the direction of the “Russian finger”, in a period of intensification of the new “Cold War”, between Russia and the West, the internal questioning of NATO by Donald Trump’s policy, etc.
As for further investigation into the case, the authorities are targeting the lower-level, so-called “expendable” executors of the missions, that is, petty criminals or people without a criminal record. This category includes unskilled casual workers, economic migrants and lumpen wanderers, who have neither hesitations nor awareness of the work they undertake. They simply carry out the orders of the people who recruit them and are paid accordingly - while there are even indications of transactions in cryptocurrencies.
As for the specific sabotage case, extremely dangerous interventions had already been detected on the Emden corvette since January 2025, such as the attempt to destroy the ship's engines with gravel inside the cylinders, the blocking of electronic control devices, and the contamination of the drinking water circuit. However, the case seemed to have been hushed up until Tuesday, February 3, 2026, when the European Eurojust announced the arrest of the two suspects, the 37-year-old Romanian in Hamburg and the 54-year-old Greek in the village of Koptero in Rhodope, one of the so-called "Pomak villages" of Thrace.
The arrest of the Greek Muslim was carried out by Komotini Security officials, who were accompanied by a group of German police officers, who came to Greece specifically to participate in the operation to locate and arrest the suspect. Against whom a European search warrant had been pending since October 10, 2025, although so far no suspicious actions have been identified, such as travel, contacts, etc. in the previous period.
The operation that resulted in the double arrest of the suspects was coordinated by Eurojust, the European Union agency for transnational cooperation in the application of criminal justice, which is based in The Hague. The two arrests were carried out with the assistance of German, Greek and Romanian agents.
19 bank books with small amounts, 6 mobile phones, 3 USB portable data storage devices, 1 hard drive and 1 SIM card were found in the arrested man's house.
A European arrest warrant had been issued against the 54-year-old by the German authorities, as part of an ongoing investigation into "acts of sabotage against defense assets", meaning the Emden and possibly other German corvettes.
