The secrets of the Chinese software on the spy's mobile phone, the QR trick and the EYP agent who tricked him
- Written by E.Tsiliopoulos
New information about how the 54-year-old Air Force colonel who was arrested spied for China has come to light.
As the ongoing investigation shows, the 54-year-old officer used special Chinese software that he had installed on one of the two mobile phones he owned and that worked as follows:
- whatever the colonel photographed, he converted into a QR code,
- then with another application he sent this code to his Chinese operator,
- with a similar application the recipient of the code who was in China, converted the QR into a photo.
The cryptowallet and the 30,00
Of particular interest are also the data showing how the officer with the long resume was paid for the espionage he carried out on behalf of China.
As it was found, the 54-year-old colonel had a cryptowallet in which a transaction of 30,000 euros was recorded.
Those involved in the case may not be able to identify how much money the 54-year-old had in the digital wallet, however, these transactions confirm that the officer was being paid, something he himself has admitted anyway.
How the EYP agent broke him
When the colonel was arrested and taken for questioning, he initially denied any involvement in what had emerged from the months-long investigation of the Greek authorities, who had been notified months ago by the CIA.
His interrogation was undertaken by two EYP executives: one from the counterintelligence department and the second with excellent knowledge of electronic systems and technology.
According to competent sources, the decisive element for the 54-year-old colonel to "break through" and finally confess to spying for China was the detailed description and analysis that the EYP executive gave him of the special software that had been detected on his mobile phone.
The trip to China and the meeting in Athens
The 54-year-old, as it was also learned, had traveled privately to Beijing in 2024 to attend a foreign language seminar, without informing his service about the trip abroad as military personnel are required to do.
It is believed that the Greek officer's first face-to-face contacts with the Chinese who undertook to recruit him took place there. In one of these, he also gave him the phone with the encrypted applications for their communication.
A face-to-face meeting also took place in Athens, in 2025, when the Chinese association was in Greece for a few hours on the occasion of a conference in another European country.
