Sabotage in the remote control of the Athens-Thessaloniki rail line - Perps wanted deaths on Tempi anniversary says Minister

As he explained, “the remote control had a cement cover for protection so that Roma groups would not cut them. This is pure sabotage by someone who wanted people dead two days before the anniversary of Tempi. They went and broke the cement, took out the cables and cut them with special cables. They didn’t steal anything, they didn’t have any financial benefit, they cut them and left.”

The result of the sabotage, according to Mr. Kyranakis, was that the entire remote control system went down on Thursday afternoon: “Two days before Tempi, some people wanted to put human lives at risk,” said the deputy minister of transport, according to whom the problem is being corrected and will be live again in a few hours.

“Since yesterday we also have the new system that functions as a check. Even if the remote control system goes down somewhere via railway.gov.gr, the OSE control center sees with centimeter accuracy where the trains are. It is not GPS. It is a specialized system that gives an accuracy of less than 5 centimeters, when a rule is violated, an alarm is automatically raised at the OSE control center,” added Mr. Kyranakis

“At the OSE control center, some people have the exclusive job of preventing trains from colliding again on the Greek railway. By the end of March, all train sets will be on railway.gov.gr - today there are 15 - and by the end of April, all trains everywhere, including suburban trains"

According to him, "we are much safer than the Tempi era and even safer than in 2019 when we had 1% remote control. Now we are at 80 and in the summer we will be at 100% and we will expand everywhere, including in the northern Peloponnese."
