Brazilian transgender person attacked in Rhodes Old Town

The two women were injured after being attacked by three unknown men, while one of them complained that the racist attack against her had a transphobic motive.

The 24-year-old victim is a permanent resident of Brazil and was on the island, while her 32-year-old friend, although also born in Brazil, permanently resides in Portugal and is temporarily hosted in Rhodes.

The two women, according to what they complained about, had no previous acquaintance or difference with the perpetrators, who remain unknown.

According to information from "Demokratiki", the incident took place at approximately 5 am, when the 24-year-old foreigner, who was in the Medieval City, was confronted by three unknown men.

As it appears from her complaint, one of the men threw her to the road and, during the struggle that followed, caused abrasions to her face, while also breaking a tooth.

The victim claimed that the attack against her was carried out because she is a person with transgender characteristics.

Her 32-year-old friend rushed to help her, but she was also attacked.

The two women left injured, and the same morning they appeared at the Police to report the incident.

A forensic examination was ordered for both victims, in order to officially document and certify the physical injuries they suffered.

The perpetrators fled

The element that differentiates the case from a typical incident of nighttime violence is the 24-year-old victim's clear statement about the motive of the perpetrators.

The claim that the attack was committed because she is a transgender person is expected to be a central subject of the investigation, as any documentation of a racist motive significantly changes the legal treatment of the act and burdens the position of the perpetrators, whenever they are identified.

Immediately after the complaint was filed, the prescribed mechanism was mobilized.

At the same time, a preliminary investigation is being conducted to determine the circumstances of the incident, while the three unknown perpetrators are being sought.

The fact that the attack occurred in a central location, at a time when night traffic has not yet completely died down, may make it easier to identify witnesses or other evidence that will shed light on the case.
