Varopoulou to head Hellenic Foundation for Culture

The board of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, during its latest meeting, decided to establish a branch in Nicosia, in a building offered by the government of Cyprus. The board also decided to place Eleni Varopoulou as director of the HFC's branch in Berlin, replacing Eleftherios Oikonomou.

Eleni Varopoulou is a theatrologist, art and theater critic, translator, and essayist. She has worked as a theater critic and journalist, since 1974, for various Greek newspapers (mainly To Vima) and European magazines. She has written articles on various cultural issues and contemporary trends in international theater.

She has translated writings by Heiner Muller, Walter Benjamin, Herman Broch, Bertolt Brecht. She has taught theatrology at the universities of Athens and Patra and the Institut für Theater-, Film- und Medienwissenschaft of the J. W. Goethe-Universität, in Frankfurt. She has also held the post of president of the Hellenic Center of the International Theater Institute (1986-1992).

She established and directed the Argos Festival (1992-1997). As an art critic she has organized several exhibitions, including the Greek participation at the "Quatennial of Architecture and Theatre Design", Prague 1991.

The HFC Berlin Branch

It has a library, a multipurpose hall for a variety of events, including Greek language lessons. The branch has developed activities not only in Berlin but throughout Germany and the German-speaking areas of Central Europe, in co-operation with local agencies, diplomatic authorities, the cultural institutions of other countries and organisations of Greeks. Its activities extend to virtually all areas of German cultural life. It co-organises major events in Germany with the aim of promoting Greece and Greek culture.
